Loretta June Retan

Loretta June Retan
Born: Aug 08, 2019
Died: Feb 20, 2015

On Friday February 20, 2015, Loretta Retan, age 70, of Chinook, Montana passed away of natural causes at approximately 2:03 pm at the Northern Montana Hospital in Havre, Montana.  A celebration of life was held at Edwards Funeral Home on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 7:00 pm. Arrangements were made with Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
Loretta married Joe Gray, father of Sandy, she married Doug Hopkins, father of Rochelle and Alvin, and Dennis Retan who was retired from the Navy and resided in Chinook, Montana where they made their home. She was born to Amos “Nace” First Raised and Melvina “Horn” First Raised on August 11, 1945 at the old Fort Belknap Agency hospital.  Loretta graduated from the high school at Chilacco Indian School in Oklahoma and later she went on relocation to Chicago, Illinois where she took secretarial training.  Places that Loretta worked throughout her secretarial career were places such as Proctor and Gamble in Chicago, Illinois, the BIA as a Receptionist, and BLM Range Assistant in Havre, Montana.  Back in the days when secretaries were still doing shorthand, Loretta really enjoyed that part of her job because she was really good at it from the hours and hours that she practiced shorthand.
Loretta’s hobbies included working on crossword puzzles, attending Pow Wows, watching football and basketball on television and live in the school gymnasiums and football fields.  She and her best friend Sophie La Tray were regulars at both football games and basketball games. They would go early to every game they went to and both had their favorite places that they loved to park at.  Loretta especially loved watching her two granddaughters Jasmine and Kianna Dumas play basketball during high school and college.  Her granddaughters still play college basketball at Stone Child and they will miss Grandma Loretta in the audience but are comforted at the thought of knowing that she will be looking down and watching over them from Heaven where her new home is, and that she no longer is in pain or sorrow.
Loretta is survived by daughters Sandy (Jeff) Gray of Bozeman, MT, Rochelle (Miguel) Hopkins of Ft Belknap; son Alvin Douglas Hopkins of Chinook, MT; sisters Arleda Hopkins of Greatt Falls, MT, Julia (Ed) Doney; brothers Amos First Raised, Jr. and Frank (Mary) First Raised, grandchildren Darren Gray, Leonard Whitehorse, Desert Storm Gray, Jasmine Dumas, Kianna Hopkins, Kylee Azure, and Petey Azure, and great grandchildren; Aunna-Lea LaMere, Nash Gray, Laria-Floy Hopkins and Raya Loretta June LaMere and numerous relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dennis Retan, her parents, Amos and Melvina, her brothers Bryan and Jesse, and her sisters, Marlene and Belva.

We have known Loretta since she & Dennis would visit us at the ACE Hardware store many years ago. Loretta loved to drive our road to see the mini ponies at various places and began stopping by when we got a mini paint filly for our grandson. A gracious lady Loretta was and we miss her drive-bys tremendously. She was a dear & special friend.
