Jack Kenneth Gist died March 14, 2015, surrounded by family. A public viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the Edwards Funeral Home in Chinook. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Edwards Funeral Home in Chinook. Arrangements have been made with Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
Jack was born on December 20, 1932 to Leo and Pauline Gist in Big Sandy.  He was the second youngest of six children. He attended school at the Gist school in the Missouri River Breaks, Big Sandy and Chinook.
On June 1, 1952, he married Ora Chapman, his high school sweetheart.  They made their first home on the Gist Ranch in the Missouri River Breaks on Bullwacker Creek.  From there they moved to Louisiana while Jack served in the military.  It was here their first child was born. When they returned to Montana, they lived and worked on several places in Hill and Blaine counties before buying their own place east of Chinook in 1977.
He took exceptional pride in the farm that he and Ora bought 30 years ago.  They transformed it into one of the best hay producing farms in the Milk River Valley.  Jack liked serving his community.  He served on the Chinook School Board and spent many years on local irrigation ditch boards.  He was one of the first to introduce round bales to the area and became a local dealer for round balers and related equipment.
Jack enjoyed the camaraderie of his close friends, through the many weekend visits, the hours spent working on projects, exchanging stories, and helping each other out.
Jack was well known for his leather work--including custom built western boots, braided headstalls, reins, and other tack. He also enjoyed listening to country-western music and reading.
Survivors include children: Vicki Gist of Havre, Steven (Ginny) Gist of Whitefish, Joel Gist of Chinook, Terri Gist (Wynne) Rolf of Havre, Debra Gist Hockley of Saratoga, Wyoming, and Clinton (Dottie) Gist of Silverdale, Washington. Grandchildren: Jody, Jessie, and Jacki Gist; Samuel and Tatten Hockley; and Heather and Justin Rolf; and step-grandchildren: Whelen and Hannah O'Brien. He is also survived by his sister Catherine Morgan of Chinook, sister-in-law Judy Chapman of Chinook, and cousin, Barbara Lafrantz of Whitefish, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ora, grandson Cordel Hockley, brothers Leo (Sonny) Gist and an infant twin brother, sisters Frances Gist Hermes, Bette Gist Teter, Esther Gist Fazzi and an infant sister; and his parents.
