Traditional funeral service

The traditional funeral service typically consists of a full funeral service at a church, our funeral chapel, or the location of your choice. A funeral service provides an opportunity for family and friends to gather, mourn, and celebrate the life of their loved one. Often the body is presented in a casket which allows family and friends to pay their respects in person. A traditional funeral often consists of one or more of the following:

  • Visitation, wake or viewing - Customarily held the night before or a day or two prior to a funeral service, the visitation – also called a wake or a viewing provides a way for friends and acquaintances to pay their individual respects and offer their condolences to the family.

  • Memorial or Tribute Service - Similar to a funeral or visitation, a memorial service gives family and friends a time to come together and celebrate the memory of the deceased’s life.

  • Graveside Service - A graveside service is held at the gravesite just prior to the burial of the casket or urn. This final service usually consists of a eulogy, final remarks, prayers or in memoriam sentiments.

  • Military honors – The presentation of military honors is a special ceremony that pays respects to our veterans. An honor guard detail, consisting of member of the local Armed Forces, will be present for the burial service of an eligible veteran. The honor detail will perform a ceremony that includes draping the American flag over the veteran’s casket, a gun salute, the playing of taps and the folding and presentation of the American flag to the next of kin.

A traditional service often includes music, eulogies, prayers and speeches, a register book, and memorial folders. Edwards Funeral home will handle all the arrangement and details for a service including care and custody of the deceased, managing schedules with clergy, music, the facility, cemetery, pall bearers and others, placing obituary and funeral notices with media, assisting in arrangements with the cemetery, set-up, grave opening and closing, flowers and monuments, arranging transportation for family members, supervision of the funeral or memorial service, and securing state certificates and authorizations.

Before the service, families will also often gather for a visitation, wake or viewing of the body. Often after the service burial will immediately follow at the cemetery of the family’s choice.
